The Balanced Christian Youth. (Eccl.12:1)

KEY TEXT: “Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor Him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore”

(NLT, Eccles, 12:1).

The youthful age is a very sensitive one. It is best referred to as a time of developmental crisis in the life of a youth. At this age, he or she has passed the childhood age but is still not officially in the family picture of recognition of adulthood, because he or she is not yet fully an adult too. At this stage, the much pampering of parents given yo him or her at the childhood age tends to be withdrawn from the youth and is displayed only for those at the childhood age in the family. So, a youthful age is a life at a round about of numerous decisions which the next road decided to be taken will either mar or make the youth.

It is at this lonely roundabout that most youths meet fellow youths that impact positive habits in them or evil seeds that grow in them through into adult lives. The youthful age is filled with confusion because the youth is surrounded and tempted by many things in life which he or she would be craving to test to know their taste. The youths also hear many voices of advice in them without knowing which to obey and which not to. At this age, they always suspect the parents and elderly people to be cheats who have caged them all their childhood age and denied them the freedom and pleasures of life. So, the youths mostly tend to be stubborn and disobedient to parents, teachers and elders. At this stage, they trust and believe their peer group or fellow youths more than anybody. This is where the danger lies and begins!

At this age, they tend to learn everything practically by themselves. They lose their virginities, fornicate, masturbate, get pregnant or impregnate somebody, smoke, date opposite sexes, take alcoholic drinks, attend night parties, and take drugs, etc. All these are done in a bid to taste life practically by themselves.

At this stage, the chances of recovery and maintenance of virtues are slim. So many parents, at this stage, tend to think that their one time precious, obedient child is lost out of their hand, hence they become discouraged in continuing parenting him or her. No. Don’t lose hope. It is just a stage he or she has to pass through. You passed it too, didn’t you? This means that the youth needs adequate all round support and closeness of the the parents in order to have a safe and positive landing when coming out of the youthful age, which must surely faze out when the child reaches another stage of life. It is at the youthful age that children who have been parented or trained in the Christian way pay their parents and guardians with peace and solitude which other parents cannot find with their own children at the youthful age.

The life of a Christian youth must be balanced. The phrase “a balanced youth” refers to a Christian youth. If a youth is not “balanced” spiritually, academically, and in other good and positive aspects, he or she is not a christian youth. Jesus Christ is the model of Christian youths. When Jesus was a youth, he led a positive, unique life. Instead of displaying the disobedience to parents and elders that marks the youthful age, the Bible recorded that He lived in peace with both man and God.
“Then He returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart.
Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people”.
(Luke 2 :51-52) Therefore, the Christian youths must be people that obey and follow good advice from parents and elders around them. They shouldn’t be heady, for Jesus wasn’t. Many youths beat their parents and elderly ones both in the family and outside to intimidate them to stop cautioning them on the evil things they do. Some youths always warn their elders with threats. Such a person is not a Christian even if he or she goes to church. “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee” (Exodus 20:12).

Youths are always too anxious to get the necessities of life so that the society will accept them as adults at all means. For this reason, some start dating the opposite sex with a view of marriage. Some join armed robbery to make it quick. Some gamble in Naira/Niger bets, pools and other gambling sites in order to come across a huge amount of money at once. Some sell drugs. Some join cults in order to be feared. Some female youths sell their bodies to men like prostitutes, though they don’t live in the hotels, but in their father’s houses and in schools. This evil anxiousness that have only sinful results should not breed in a Christian youth. “Run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, pursue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts”.
(2 Timothy 2 :22)
As a Christian youth, you must gear your life towards good and positive things only. If there is anything you need which you have not gotten, you should not sin to get it at all means. You commit it to God in prayers. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all He has done.
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus”.
(Philippians 4 :6-7)

Most youths are not born again till they reach adult age. Most youths aim at being born again only when they are married. For them, at that time, they would have an object of sexual satisfaction at home and therefore curtail their bids to commit immorality outside. Who told you that the only reason for one to be born again is for one to stop immorality? Somebody can be very faithful to his or her spouse and yet he or she is not born again. In fact, somebody can be good in character in all ramifications but yet not born again! If that “good” person dies, he or she will go to hell. Being born again is greater than being chaste (not having sex) and being “good” in character. That is why the ordained people in the Catholic church live in ignorance when they take oaths of celibacy and chastity. They will still go to hell if they don’t give their lives to Jesus Christ and come out of that cult in the name of a church. Being born again is a spiritual thing. It is the only thing that makes God recognize you as His own, live in you and relate with you. It is only being born again that gives you the opportunity to renounce your original belonging to Satan and surrender your soul to God. It is only being born again that gives you the opportunity to have your name cancelled from the book of death(hell) and written in the book of life(heaven). Everybody’s name has originally been in the book of death until the person cancels it. If you don’t cancel it, you have done yourself the most wicked thing on earth. God doesn’t need your celibacy, chastity and being good in character or helping the poor. He needs your soul! He wants to be your Lord. He wants you to appreciate the sacrifice of His son Jesus Christ for you by dying in your stead and giving you an opportunity for an eternal life.
