TOPIC: REGRET WITHOUT REMORSE

KEY TEXT: “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death” (2 Corinthians 7:10)

Before one repents, he or she must first regret the sin committed by him or her. But there are regrets for sins that don’t actually yield to repentance. It is the regret for sin without remorse. Regrets can come upon a person who is moved to heart by a preacher’s choice of words which exposes and convicts a person of sin, but this feeling could be shallow, induced and short- lived. Such mere influenced regret, instead of producing repentance, could result in the culprit devising another way of committing the same sin.

But remorse is deeper than regret. It is remorse that breaks the heart of a sinner. The Bible says such that come with such broken hearts cannot be rejected by God. You need God’s intervention to repent. Repentance is a gift from God. As you break your heart in remorseful regret, God will see the heart and release the necessary grace for repentance.

Mere regret of sin is always bedecked and accompanied with pride and arguments. But remorseful regret is apologetic.

When there is any preaching in church, touched by the preacher’s choice of words, many come out for altar calls or regret their sins, but how many people who regret their sins are actually remorseful? That is why sins are recurrent in some people’s lives. John the Baptist understood this very well. So, whenever he preached and many people troop into the river to be baptized, he would sound the warning that they accompany the repentance with fruits/works worthy of repentance.
“When the crowds came to John for baptism, He said, “You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God’s coming wrath?
Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones”
(Luke 3 :7-8)

There are fruits/works that a person that has actually repented bring forth. Somebody who regrets his or her sin without remorse that leads to real repentance cannot bring forth such fruits. Such fruits/works show a change of life and differentiates the person’s former life from the latter. These fruits will not be hidden, but seen and experienced by people around the repented person.
“The crowds asked, “What should we do?” John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry”. Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?” He replied, “Collect no more taxes than the government requires”.
“What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay”
(Luke 3 :10-14)

Judas Iscariot regretted his sin but wasn’t remorseful enough to draw the required grace of repentance from God. If the peace true repentance gives had come into him, he wouldn’t have committed suicide. But peter was remorseful to the heart and changed with his own repentance. Afterwards, he boldly used the opportunities of meeting the people that crucified Jesus and condemned their acts in their faces without fear. But that was the same Jesus he denied three times for fear of death. That is the fruit of true repentance. David also had a deep remorse when he was convicted of adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah.

What about you? Why haven’t you conquered your sins? Why are they still recurrent in your life? Why are you always regretting without repenting? You can tell God to break your stony heart by Himself and give you a godly sorrow which will lead to repentance.
