TOPIC: IDLENESS AND LAZINESS

KEY TEXT:
“I walked by the field of a lazy person,     the vineyard of one with no common sense.
I saw that it was overgrown with nettles. It was covered with weeds, and its walls were broken down.
Then, as I looked and thought about it, I learned this lesson:
A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest,
then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber”.
(Proverbs 24 :30-34).

Many people, especially Christians, present ‘the hands of their work” to God to bless. This makes them to be perpetually waiting on God to perform a magic in their lives and throw food down from heaven. Thus, you see some people always praying and fasting for financial breakthrough without working. This is a wrong notion. What God blesses is not the mere “hands of your work”. What He blesses is rather
“the work of your hands”. Spending all day fasting, praying and reading the Bible, asking God to establish you financially will never be fruitful until you establish a work first, or a job, or a trade, and then, you can now pray that God should establish that thing you are doing. It was where Peter and his colleagues were busy fishing that Jesus Christ met them and blessed the work their hand and their net got filled with fish.

God hates idleness and laziness. They lead people to poverty, gossip, lack, envy, immorality, drunkenness, and many other sins. It is said that idle hands are the devil’s workshop. It was idleness at the time of war that led David to commit adultery with Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife. In the markets, when business is hot and people are busy with trading, that is when some christian traders will be reading their Bible, or go to the mountains for prayers for financial success! Brother/sister, this is wrong. There is a time for everything. You are doing the right thing at the wrong time! It is comparable to what happens in some Christian marriages in bearing children. The couple seeking for the fruit of the womb should utilize the few productive days of the woman’s ovulation period in a month well. Those few days of ovulation should mostly be spent in the bedroom, not on the mountain where you are praying for God to give you children. Jesus Christ will ever remain the only child that entered a woman’s womb by the spirit because He is God. But all other persons must be made by husbands and wives in the bedroom during those few days of ovulation in a month as God has authorized couples with the task. I am not saying you shouldn’t pray at all. Fulfill your conjugal rights in the bedroom first then back it up with prayers. Don’t be too spiritual to be together. You can’t be more spiritual than God that brought two of you together. There is a season for everything which you must utilize. If you are into forex trading online where you trade currencies and other instruments, there are days and hours in a week that are safe for you to place trades, if not those times, you will blow your account or meet a nonfunctional online market.

God would want us to be industrious rather than lazy. Industry is the opposite of idleness and laziness. For some people, they are full of excuses why they are not making it in life. “The lazy person claims, “There’s a lion out there! If I go outside, I might be killed!”
(Proverbs 22 :13). They always make conclusions on why they are not doing anything and keep on relaxing.

For some people that are ministers, they use the ministerial work as an excuse for not working. Right from Genesis chapter three, after the sin of Adam, God designated man to eat through his sweat. Peter and his colleagues were fishermen. Paul was a tentmaker. I, sister Jane, am a teacher. I teach English language in an international secondary school. Ministers should be industrious. They should not over labour the church as liabilities. I use every kobo that comes into my ministry from ministerial work to boost my ministry’s evangelical program and prosper the writing of this daily devotional. My ministerial account is not for my personal, private upkeep. Don’t be lazy. God abhors it. “And now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received from us.
For you know that you ought to imitate us. We were not idle when we were with you.
We never accepted food from anyone without paying for it. We worked hard day and night so we would not be a burden to any of you.
We certainly had the right to ask you to feed us, but we wanted to give you an example to follow.
Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those unwilling to work will not get to eat”.
(2 Thessalonians 3 :6-10).
