Distractions During Prayers.(Jeremiah 29:13)

KEY TEXT: “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart” (KJV, Jeremiah 29:13).

Distractions at the time of prayer is common to all Christians. You cannot overcome it by being more spiritual. In fact, the more spiritual you tend to be, the more distracted at the time of prayer the devil would want you to be. The only solutions to distractions at the time of prayer is applying measures that will combat them even if they come.

The place or environment where you pray, the type of things or people around you, the actions exhibited around you, the sounds and lightening, the time of the prayer, the purpose for which you are praying for and the thoughts of your heart matter a lot in prayers. These are the bedrocks or the foundational causes of distractions during prayers.

In the course of this teaching, I may not fully give you my own measures of tackling distractions during prayers because it may not favour you, but I will make wide suggestions that may meet your own target.
Some of the measures to combat causes of distractions during prayers are discussed below. One: schedule a time for the prayers. This time mapped out for prayers are always made free of chores and appointments when it becomes a routine. Make the prayer time a priority too.

Two: pray with reasonable purpose. Some people play with words at the time of prayer. It shows that they are not praying with a burden. Don’t pray to fulfill all righteousness. Pray with an aim to get something in return.

Three: put your phones on silence and put them away from you while praying. Some people get attracted to their phones for calls, text messages and the worse, chatting of the social media.

Four: you may need to leave your normal environment. Prayers sometimes go more normal when you are in abnormal environments. By “abnormal” I don’t mean a sinful place; I mean a place that does not give room for relaxation. Family members, neighbours and friends can be one’s sources of distractions during prayers. Jesus would always separate Himself from people and go to a lonely place to pray. (Mark 1:35) That is why some people go to the bushes, mountains and other isolated places to pray.

Five: For some people they get more focused to pray when they pray as a group, in the church or in public, gingered by other people’s voices. But it all depends on psychological makeups. It doesn’t work for me. Public prayers distract me. I prefer to pray alone in an isolated place. I could pray well with one or two companions but not with crowds. “But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you”
(Matthew 6 :6)
I love viewing natural environments and also prefer such places best for my prayers.

Six: pray with emotions. When you are praying earnestly, you must bare yourself to the spirit of God. This can make you to cry, laugh, shout, roll on the floor and do other things as the spirit will control you. You are talking to the only person that can solve your problems and there are no feelings attached to your words? Get serious. You need to hold Jesus’ feet or garment while praying. Didn’t Jacob refuse to let God go until He blessed him? At the time of prayers you need a wrestle with God. Have you not read the things Jesus did during His prayers? Even Elijah put his head between his legs. You need to “take it by force”.

Seven: pray with scriptures. Praying with the scriptures feed you with more words and help you to be fluent. It also puts in seriousness in you while praying.

Eight: pray with songs or hymns. This instills more strength, vigour, focus and seriousness during prayers. Songs during prayers boost my prophetic gifts.

Nine: pray in tongues. Praying in tongues makes you last longer in prayers and helps you get out of the physical realm into the spiritual realm.

Ten: close your eyes. There is no place in the Bible where we are asked to close our eyes while we pray, but it is one of the strongest measures to combat distractions during prayers. If you keep your eyes open, even the things around you that you see always may be manipulated by the devil to pose some funny pictures to your understanding.
