KEY TEXT: “One of them, when He saw that He was healed, came back to Jesus, shouting, “Praise God!”

He fell to the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what He had done. This man was a Samaritan.

Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine?

Has no one returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?”

And Jesus said to the man, “Stand up and go. Your faith has healed you”

(Luke 17 :15-19)

God takes delight in testimonies. It comforts the sorrowful people in the church who have witnessed the same situation like that of the testifier. It teaches people lessons. It boosts people’s faith and hope in God. He expects testimonies from anybody He did one thing or the other for. The highest thing we can offer God on earth is glorification which is done non stop in heaven. God shouldn’t be the one to remind us or incite us to give testimonies like He did in our key text when He asked the leper that came to thank Him where the other nine colleagues of his were.

Are you like the nine lepers that didn’t come back to give testimonies of their healing? If yes, you are a debtor of testimonies. You owe God. Remember the Bible’s instruction  “owe no man nothing” (Romans 13:8).

I found out that many people in church actually recognize that God did something good and worthy of praise and testimony for them, but many find it difficult to come out in the congregation and thank Him. Testimony is like paying tithe. It is a command from God which you must need to fulfill. It is not something you do if you feel like or wish, otherwise, you will owe God the glorification. If God doesn’t care if we give testimonies. Jesus wouldn’t have asked the question “where are the other nine?”. The Bible’s command is: “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy”(Psalms 107:2)

One of the things that hinder people from giving testimonies in church is counting time with God. If they give a testimony today, they will want God to “rest awhile” before they give another one. Similarly, they won’t want the congregation to see them as always coming out. Do you know that you cannot give God full attention or have serious fellowship with Him in church when you don’t mind your own business with Him at that time of service. Though you are in the mist of many people, don’t generalize worship. Make it personal. Sing, clap, dance, pray as if you are alone in the church building. Yes! That is the type of heart God wants! That was the type of mind the woman of the issue of blood carried and got her healing, while others just flocked around Jesus without personal, serious focus on Him. So, stop counting your times of coming out to give testimonies. The Psalmist says he would declare God’s righteousness everyday(Psalms 71:15). Don’t mind what people in church say.

Another thing that makes people to sheer away from giving their testimonies is fear. If it is something like a testimony on lost money recovered, contracts gotten and other financial issues, the testifier may fear to declare such in public. The parents of the blind man Jesus made to see feared to give the testimony because they feared their Jewish leaders, unlike their bold son that stood his ground. “His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who had announced that anyone saying Jesus was the Messiah would be expelled from the synagogue.

…“I don’t know whether He is a sinner,” the man replied. “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!”

(John 9 :22, 25)

Another reason is shame. Some hate to expose their past dirty lifestyle in public as they relate it to the new life in Christ. Some women who were in the custody of kidnappers or other evil men will not come to give their testimonies, lest the church members  say they were raped, especially when the women are still single. This is also because the church is now filled with carnal people that are gossips in the communities. Every testimony they hear in church is carried around through the week with their own ” additions” to it. God sees all these. Be yourself in church.

“I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed” (Psalms 119:46). Church leaders conducting testimony sessions during church services should also mind the type of commentaries they give on people’s testimonies. Some of them tend to discourage people coming out for testimonies with their negative comments and make them enter their shells in shame, which will result in regretting giving the testimony in the first place. How can somebody come out and praise God for saving him or her from the hands of evil people that captured him or her, and the negative, saucy comment you will make on that will be “please, don’t be careless next time”. Hmmm. I, sister Jane, have nearly fallen victim to evil men’s pranks severally. But at each occasion, I always notice one thing: if God Himself doesn’t protect you from their charms or saved you from their  dens, you can never help yourself, no matter your carefulness, smartness, wisdom, strength, and even spirituality. Yes. Don’t describe roads you have not passed in life.

Another thing that makes people not to give their testimonies is lack of the knowledge of it’s eternal consequence. “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven” (Mathew 10:32-33). Not giving your testimonies is denial of Jesus Christ.

Sometimes, lack of good oral skill and mastery of English Language speech also make some people not to come out for testimonies. They don’t want to make mistakes in English and be laughed at. Is English language your mother tongue? Instead of struggling with the foreign language, you can give your testimonies in your local language. It is even clearer and more interesting when it is given in our local languages. There is always an interpreter in the church for the benefit of the non indigenes.

However, some people’s testimonies are blatant lies or sometimes, exaggeration. Don’t add. If God had wanted you to add more episodes to it, He would have allowed you more of the trouble.

If your church doesn’t give testimonies, change your church to a Bible believing and spirit-filled church. Churches that don’t accept or give testimonies are Orthodox. They are nearly like traditional worshippers. They carry Bibles but live by men’s doctrines or church commandments. They make their members avoid living according to the Bible. It is better you continue changing churches for better ones than end up in hell.

1. God, forgive me for all the testimonies I owe you.

2. God, make the memories of the testimonies you need me to give at all cost fresh in me.

3. God, give me more testimonies to declare for the edification of the church.
