Before Breakfast: Proverbs 18:24
“Friends come and friends go, but a true friend sticks by you like family. ”
Proverbs 18:24 (MSG)
The dictionary defines a friend as a person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically one exclusive of sexual or family relations.
Some people had got good recommendations or remarks by friends, which take them to an exalted position or good ‘connection’; while others have found themselves in regrettable and unpalatable circumstances as a result of the type of friends they keep.
According to the writer of this bible verse for today, there are two main types of friends viz:
1.The friends that come into one’s life for the benefits they tend to gain, and if they no longer or can’t get any, they leave.
2. The second are the type of friends that stick closely like a blood relation, irrespective of whether they get any benefit or not. They are ready to sacrifice anything for the safety, wellbeing and comfort of their friends. This type of friendship was the type Jesus Christ illustrated in John 15:12-13. This was the type of frienship between David and Jonathan. (1Samuel 18:3).
We all need friends that will stick closely to us; who will listen to us, care for us, be there for us when their help is most needed; but we should make all efforts in becoming such friends to people close to us as we trust God to reveal such to us.
Conclusively, watch and be careful of the type of friends you keep, to avoid being negatively influenced against God’s will or get implicated for wrong doings that may tarnish the image of Christ in us!
