SPIRIT MEAT DAILY DEVOTIONAL BY REV OLUSOLA AND REV OYENIKE AREOGUN

TUESDAY, 30TH MAY, 2017.

TOPIC:  RESPONDING TO THE PERSONALITIES AND PROCESS OF DESTINY FULFILMENT.

MARK 3:13-19.

We have established that there is a period between when you are born and when you eventually become born again and that many Christians have different liabilities resulting from that phase. We also saw how God chooses who should groom you for the fulfilment of your divine destiny. However, some people failed in the plan of God for their lives because they chose who they thought best to train them for their divine destiny.

MONDAY, 29TH MAY, 2017.

TOPIC:  DIVINE CHOICES OVER YOUR LIFE ARE OFFICIAL BEFORE HEAVEN.

1 KINGS 19:15-17;  1 SAMUEL 16:10-13.

In the fulfilment of your destiny, God chooses the person that should train and prepare you for what God predestined you to be and do. These choices are usually informal physically, but they are very official before heaven. Mordecai was chosen to train Esther, Moses for Joshua, David for Solomon, while Elijah was chosen to groom Elisha without pre-informing Elisha or seeking his consent.

AVENGE NOT YOURSELF

-PROVERBS 25:16-28

KEY VERSE:

“If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink” (Proverbs 25:21).

The story is told about Jane, a persecuted but non-vindictive and non-retaliatory Christian young lady somewhere in Africa.

She sometimes left her clothes on the washing line at the back of their residence. Whenever she went for fellowship or evangelism, her hostile neighbours would never help her pack them inside, perchance there was rain.

They never saw anything good in Jane. They maligned, slandered and vilified her whenever she was not at home. It happened, however that one day, Jane was at home reading her Bible when rain started threatening and some of her neighbours left their clothes outside.

When she looked outside through the window and saw the clothes, she quickly ran to help pack them inside. When they came back and saw what she had done for them, they were humiliated by shame because, they had never helped her to pack her clothes away from rain. It was Jane’s turn to take her own pound of flesh, but she refused to go on a mission of vendetta.

THE HISTORY BEHIND THE HYMN: “IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL”

The author, Horatio G. Spafford (1828-1888), was a Presbyterian layman from Chicago. He had established a very successful legal practice as a young businessman and was also a devout Christian. Among his close friends were several evangelists including the famous Dwight L. Moody, also from Chicago.

Spafford’s fortune evaporated in the wake of the great Chicago Fire of 1871. Having invested heavily in real estate along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, he lost everything overnight. In a saga reminiscent of Job, his son died a short time before his financial disaster. But the worst was yet to come.

Hymnologist Kenneth Osbeck tells the story: “Desiring a rest for his wife and four daughters as well as wishing to join and assist Moody and [his musician Ira] Sankey in one of their campaigns in Great Britain, Spafford planned a European trip for his family in 1873. In November of that year, due to unexpected last-minute business developments, he had to remain in Chicago, but sent his wife and four daughters on ahead as scheduled on the S.S. Ville du Havre. He expected to follow in a few days.

“On November 22 the ship was struck by the Lochearn, an English vessel, and sank in twelve minutes. Several days later the survivors were finally landed at Cardiff, Wales, and Mrs. Spafford cabled her husband, ‘Saved alone.’”

THEME: ANY FRUIT OF REPENTANCE?

Memorise:

Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance. Matthew 3:8

Read: Matthew 3:1-10

3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

3:4 And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

3:5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

3:6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

3:9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

3:10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
